giddy-up

First, HAPPY 2011 Y'ALL!

So had I posted a blog on Tuesday (which became my official 2011 Day 1 since that's when B returned to work) it would have been titled: a bumpy re-entry. The holidays were wonderful and whirlwind-y, complete with baking, games, gifts, movies (side note: B and I LOVED "The King's Speech"), and cherished time with both our families. However an unwelcome visitor peppered some of the two-week spread: sickness (yuck!). B developed a stomach bug on Christmas Eve and had to muster up some faux energy for a couple days. Meanwhile a few of us contracted a yucky cold-type funk. Then New Year's day I circled back to B's stomach bug (are you kidding me??!!)....hence the tough entry into 2011.

I finally found my footing yesterday and decided to launch the new year proper with a grocery store trip with D. That may not sound momentous but in the last few weeks our little guy has become a sit-up pro and I was eager to christen his new skills by setting him up in the grocery cart. I went to the store fully-loaded with all manner of snacks, a sippy cup, toys, wipes and a cart cover that had been in storage since the baby shower, just waiting for its debut.  In the interest of full disclosure, B and I had given the cart thing a go shortly before Christmas and while a trooper, poor D flopped around a lot, his cute little core working like nobody's business to support his trunk. After that trip I decided to wait for cart-trip #2....but yesterday I sensed in my bones it was "go time."

D owned the cart this time around. He proudly sat upright, chewing on a baby-toast-type-thing and took in the glorious scene of sights and sounds around him. Mid-way through he noticed that I kept pulling him tight against the aisle when I needed to grab a few things, and he thus decided to grab a few things himself. The rest of the trip then became a relentless game of "mom puts a few things in the cart--D pulls a few things off the shelf." Great fun was had by all (tad amount of sarcasm here...just a tad though since he was soo ridiculously cute :). Momma's reward for the cart triumph and shelf game: a monster afternoon nap during which she pondered the new year and what may lie ahead.
